Can Chiropractic Care Reduce How Often You Get Migraines?

by for content

Migraines are fairly common and is the third most prevalent illness in the world. They are a more severe form of tension headache and cause a level of pain that can sometimes be debilitating, preventing sufferers from doing anything other than lie in bed for hours. Unfortunately, over the counter pain medication for migraines is often ineffective, but thankfully there are alternative methods available to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. Chiropractic care has been proven effective for successfully treating migraine pain in a number of clinical trials. If you are unhappy with the pain relief you are receiving from your current medication, or if you are afraid of potential side effects, you will want to give chiropractic care for migraines a try.

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractors are trained professionals specializing in the use of spinal manipulation therapy; in this form of therapy, they gently manipulate your bones, muscles and joints. It has been proven effective for many forms of chronic pain, including migraine headaches, and carries a low risk of side effects. In addition, chiropractors can instruct you on many forms of self-care you can do outside the chiropractor's office, such as gentle stretching exercises, in order to increase the effectiveness of your chiropractic care.

How Effective Is Chiropractic Care For Migraines?

One study from the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics has found that spinal manipulation therapy is as effective as a common prescription drug for treating migraine headaches in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks and the severity of pain during the attacks. Participants were asked in a follow-up study after the main phase of the trial was concluded how their migraine episodes had progressed, and participants that received chiropractic care for migraines had less episodes than those taking medication. In another systemic review from the same peer-reviewed journal, researchers examined the statistical data and reviewed the conclusions of nine different clinical studies comparing the effectiveness of spinal manipulation therapy to various prescription drugs used to treat migraines, along with other alternative medicine therapies, and reached the same conclusion. Additionally, participants receiving spinal manipulation therapy suffered fewer side effects compared to participants taking medication.

With the clear evidence in favor of the effectiveness of chiropractic care for migraines, it's definitely an avenue to consider for treatment of pain related to your chronic migraines. As with any medical treatment, ask your chiropractor about possible contraindications for care, such as osteoporosis, arthritis and nerve damage. If you are pregnant, you should seek the advice of your obstetrician before beginning care. Reducing the frequency and intensity of your migraine episodes, along with potential side effects of migraine medication, can definitely increase the quality of your live and aid you in living pain-free.
